Cahuala is a location close to Huillinco Lake in Chiloé, an island in the south of Chile.

More than 30 years ago we chose to live here, in the depth of a beautiful rainforest, to fulfil our life project.

Most of us were scouts, so camping together we discovered that the closeness to friends, nature, and scout values allowed us to find a deeper and more permanent meaning for the scouting motto “Be prepared”.

We lived together in Santiago for two years, trying to expand our camp life experience into our everyday city life.

We lived together in Santiago for two years, trying to expand our camp life experience into our everyday city life.

And we realized living this way together was not only possible but could be strongly projected into our future. So once we finished our university studies, we decided to set off to Chiloé to find a place to live.

Since our arrival in October 1987, our life as a community has been dedicated to creating both a physical space to live in and a psychological place for our personal development: A self-development school. Enrique Urrutia who was our scout leader, has guided this school and has accompanied each one of us in our personal search for a meaningful path and our well-being.

We built our houses in the midst of a forest and, as time has passed, we have slowly transformed the woods into a park. Some have left and some have joined. Today, considering adults and our children that are mostly living their own life plans, we are a community family of 29 people. The park is not only our home but a meeting place for family and friends.

We have actively participated in the local government of Cahuala and Huillinco where we have contributed to a number of initiatives as a way of giving to our neighbors for the hospitality we received.

All adults are part of Cahuala SA Partnership, from which most of our professional projects have arisen.

During these 30 years we have founded different companies and initiatives such as Cahuala Consultants, Cahuala Educational Cooperation, Cahuala Farming, Cahuala Therapeutic Center and the cafe “Café del Lago” next to Huillinco Lake. These firms give work and professional development to most of our members and to more than a hundred employees. Some members work in Castro’s hospital, in private consultation, and in the MOP. Beyond our work environment, we have found wellbeing balancing our professional life with different recreational activities.

Over the years, we have learned that nature is a favorable environment for the encounter of a Superior Being and for our self-improvement, and that it is possible to be happy and to find a life full of meaning for ourselves and others.
